So you want to find a bit more about me, eh?
Well, the short story is that I’m a 29 year old Sydneysider who bought a one way ticket to Taipei.
The longer version is that I moved here two years ago with the objective to learn Mandarin. I didn’t really have a plan, I just wanted to be here to learn the language and discover more about this country that captured my heart after a short trip the year before. It was really quite a spontaneous move, and I can honestly say that it’s a decision that I’m thankful of every day.
I first started Typing To Taipei to catalogue my time here. It started out just a blog for myself… but now with wonderful people like you reading, I try my best to share some interesting insights about all the things that make Taipei wonderful- art, music, history, food and all the things in between.
I hope you enjoy my little musings.
Glad to have you here!

Hi there
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading your blog. I find your story very inspiring and courageous. Your writing is also very engaging and thoughtful, with such a great sense of energy and spirit. Additionally, as a Taiwanese Australian, I’m particularly interested in your Australian take on living over there 🙂 Always looking forward to the next entry here. Keep up the awesome work!!
I’m also really grateful that you have chosen Taiwan and highlighted it in such a meaningful way with your words and this blog. Taiwanese people are often met with puzzled looks from those who ask about where we’re from (which is understandable), so every bit of recognition helps. Taiwan certainly isn’t the prettiest country, and Taiwanese society is not without its serious flaws, but nevertheless we are kind of proud of the little island and hope for a better future where it may be given more international recognition.
So Thank You!! All the best with your studies, writing, and your journey, and I sincerely hope that Ilha Formosa will always treat you well!
Cheers and 加油!!

Hi Funicular,
Thank you so much for your absolutely lovely comment! It made me day! Possibly my whole month 🙂 That’s really kind that you took the time to write all those kind things about my blog, it really means a lot to me.
I’m so glad you could find something of interest in my writing- I try to keep the stories interesting and relatable, although I sometimes worry I am the only one thinking these things!
I am sure you must have a lot of thoughts on Taiwan given your background. Are you based in Australia? I think it’s really interesting that you hear almost nothing about Taiwan in Australian media or advertising. I’ve heard one theory is that given our strong relationship with China, the Australia government doesn’t want to rock the boat by mentioning Taiwan as a country in itself too much. It’s really unfortunate I think! Although I must say when I left Australia it seemed that advertising was amping up a bit. It’s especially exciting to see a lot of Taiwanese eateries popping up in recent times (though apart from Mother Chu’s in Sydney, I haven’t tried any others! I’m sure living here will make me extra cautious about trying Taiwanese food in Sydney!).
I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have your identity questioned like that. I get it a lot too, especially in Australia, because I’m half Japanese, half Maltese, but born in Australia. I get the dreaded “What are you?” too much. I’m happy for people to be curious, but I wish they would ask with more consideration! Hopefully people’s understanding of Taiwan will grow with a greater focus on Asia in both schooling and the business world.
Of course Taiwan is not a perfect country as you said, but it definitely has so many wonderful aspects that are deserving of greater recognition! I hope I am playing a bit of a role in presenting Taiwan in a way that people maybe haven’t happened to come across. Even if it is to emphasise once and for all “Taiwan is not Thailand!”.
Thank you so much again for all your encouragement and for writing to me! It was really fascinating to read your take on Taiwan!
Please keep in touch!
Best of luck for yourself in whatever you’re trying to achieve!
Cheers!
TTT.
